'He is far better than many players his age '-Venu, Robin Uthappa's father, who owns a coffee estate and is a former international hockey umpire
Jubliant Father of Robin shares his joy when his son is selected to again play for INDIA
I am obviously very happy, but not over-excited, that Robin has been recalled. First of all, he has to prove himself in the first two ODIs against the West Indies. But I am confident that he will do well and even go to play in the World Cup.He has always been a good student and despite his invariably busy and tight cricket schedule, he has not neglected his studies. He was not unduly upset when he was discarded after he played only three ODIs for the country last year. He learnt a lot from discussions with the likes of Greg Chappell, as also Rahul Dravid and other greats of Karnataka cricket.Being a sportsman myself, I advised him not to bother about ups and downs, which are part of a player's life. I told him not to lose heart, and to work harder at his game and score as many runs as he can. After all, howsoever good you are in terms of elegance and technique, in the final analysis it is your statistics that are going to be counted.I am glad his hard work and prolific scoring this season have eventually paid handsome dividends. Robin was a good hockey and tennis player in his school days. In fact, he was good at many field sports. He played competitive tennis when he was about 7 or 8 years of age. He played hockey for his school and also for his state in the sub-junior category. But his coach advised him against playing hockey, fearing he might injure himself one day.He was already very good at cricket, so the coach asked him to concentrate on that game. Though a hockey player and umpire myself, I never tried to make Robin play the game since he was so naturally talented a cricketer from the beginning itself. He has a good technique. I think he is far better than many players his age. Objectively speaking, he has a very bright future in cricket.
