ROBIN UTHAPPA - THE KING

'It is nice that people recognise us as Robin's family members'

This is what Robbies sister has to tell about her mischievous brother!!!!!!!!
I am very happy and proud that Robin is back into the Indian team. I think he always deserved to be in the team. He is so talented, and his performances are also there. He is a very nice, loving brother.

He is far more mature than his age suggests. He is a bit of an introvert, but he really opens up when among friends and family. He can be very mischievous and can get away with anything! No, he does not have a girlfriend; not yet! It is very nice, when we go out together in Bangalore, that people recognise us as Robin's family members. It is nicer to see them go for Robin's autograph and ask him to pose for photographs with them.

When he was selected for the first time in the Indian team last year, I was busy in a crowded meeting and had switched off my cell phone. Robin and my mom were trying to give me the good news. When eventually I switched on the phone and heard the news of his selection, I just could not control my emotions and literally jumped with joy, regardless of many people watching me! Later, when he was presented with the Indian blazer and jersey, it was all so very touching.

I have the confidence to reclaim my place: Uthappa

Ever since he appeared in national colours for the first time, the one aspect of Robin Uthappa — apart from his abilities with the bat — that attracted most attention was the abundance of attitude that he exuded on the cricket field. But packed off to the oblivions of domestic cricket after losing his place in the Indian team in 2008, the Karnataka batsman seemed a mere shadow of his former self. Uthappa’s fortunes though have turned for the good over the last month or so, especially with his performances in the third edition of the IPL.

As he puffed his chest out and played vital roles in win after win for Royal Challengers Bangalore, not only did he seem to have regained his batting form, Uthappa’s customary confidence too had returned.Call it a just reward or simply the icing on the cake following a successful season, a spot in the Indian team for the Zimbabwean tour must have seemed like the perfect opportunity for the 24-year-old right-hander to reignite his international career, which came to a premature halt two years ago.

Although he was forced to sit out owing to a shoulder injury, Uthappa insists that he was enjoying his cricket more than ever before. “It will take close to three-four months to heal. But I believe in being completely fit when I get a chance to represent my country,” says Uthappa, who finished with 374 runs at a strike-rate of 171.55 during IPL III.

Though accustomed to being used as a drifter in the batting order for most teams that he has represented, Uthappa believes that his success had a lot to do with the fixed role that he was given within his IPL franchise.

“Once you know what is expected of you, it becomes easier to plan things and execute them to the best of your ability. Or else, you are simply shooting in the dark,” he says.

While many did believe that he had done enough to win a place in the squad for the World T20, he in fact didn’t even feature in the 30 probables list.

“I have redefined my role in the limited-over’s format. While I am game to bat anywhere in the top five when it comes to T20 cricket, I am concentrating more on batting between No. 3 and No. 5 in ODIs,” says Uthappa. It was following the first edition of the IPL that Uthappa’s stocks began diminishing, as he lost his form and his place in the Indian team, after appearing in 38 ODIs and nine T20 internationals. Fate though seemed to hand him a chance at redemption in the IPL II final, as he found himself waging a lone battle during Bangalore’s chase. “At that point I was wondering what more I had to do for a second chance,” says Uthappa, who last played an ODI against Sri Lanka during the Asia Cup in 2008. “The confidence is back and I’m sure I have the ability to reclaim my place in the team,” he says.
